Transport in Living Organism Paper

Transport in Living Organisms and Humans

A.    What is a transport system ?

1.     ___________________ require a transport mechanism to absorb useful substances into the cells and to get rid of unwanted waste from the cells.

2.     A _________________ allows substances to move rapidly within an organism.

3.     In very small organisms (amoeba), also known as __________ (single celled) organisms substances move in and out the cell directly. They do so through the process of ____________. The cell of these organism are in direct contact with their surroundings. Thus, simple diffusion is sufficient to transport substances in and _____ of the cells.

4.     For large organisms or ___________ organisms, most cells are far away from the surrounding. Hence, substances cannot enter or leave these cell directly. Diffusion will take a very long time to transport substances around their bodies efficiently.

B.    Transport system in humans

1.     The main transport system in the human body is called the _______________. It carries food and oxygen to all the cells in the body and carries waste away from the cells.

2.     The human circulatory system consist of three parts

·       ___________ : A fluid tissue that carries materials

·       ___________ : A pump which pushes blood around the body

·       ____________ : A network of tubes that carry blood around the body

3.     The circulatory system interact closely with the other human system such as ___________ and _____________ system  to make sure the human body works properly.

C.    Blood

1.     Blood has two main functions.

·       It transport substance such as ________, _________ and waste product

·       It __________ human bodies against various diseases

2.     Blood contains ____________, which are suspended in a yellowish liquid called __________

3.     Red blood cells have _____________. They contain hemoglobin which combines readily with _________. Without them, cell are unable to obtain oxygen rapidly

4.     About 90% of plasma is ___________, the rest includes, nutrient, __________, _______ and wastes. Without plasma, cells are unable to obtain useful substances and get rid of wastes rapidly.

5.     ___________ cells recognize and identify foreign material and kill them. They produce ____________ to fight infection.

6.     ____________ are tiny pieces of blood cell. They help blood to _______. Without ___________, human will continuously ______ and _________ can easily enter the bloodstream.

D.    Heart

1.     The heart contains two smaller upper chambers called the ____________ and ________________ and two larger lower chambers called the ______________ and __________________

2.     The heart is actually two separate pump side by side. A wall down middle divides the heart into two halves. The walls of the four chambers are made up of ____________.

Each time the heart beats, the muscles ___________ and pump blood to all part of body.

3.     ________________ blood from the body enters the right atrium then into the ________________ (this is through the vena). This blood passes from the right ventricle, then out into __________ (through the pulmonary artery)

4.     _______________ blood from the lungs enter the left atrium and then into the left ventricle (through the pulmonary vein). This blood passes from the __________, then out to the rest of the body again (through the aorta).

5.     The heart and veins have _________ to prevent the black flow of blood. This ensures that blood flows in one direction.

E.    Blood vessel

1.     There are three types of blood vessel, namely ___________, __________ and capillaries.

2.     ____________ carry blood away from the heart to all part of the body. Most arteries carry blood _________________

3.     The heart forces blood into the arteries. Hence, arteries have ______________ wall to withstand high pressure.

4.     _________ carry blood back to the heart from all part of the body. Most veins carry blood with __________

5.     As the pressure of the blood is ________ in the veins, they have thinner walls than arteries

6.     _________________ have very thin walls to allow substances to pass through them to enter the cells and from the cells into the blood
