Classification Living and non-living
Lets Group these picture in the above !
How
should we go about grouping their picture collection?
We
grouped their picture collection. How did they group their picture? What characteristics did they use for their grouping?
What is classification?
We
have placed their picture in groups. This is known as classification
Why do we classify things?
Classification
can help us to see things in a more orderly way. This would make it easier for
us to study and and understand the diversity around us.
How do we classify things?
Things
can be classified based on their common characteristics. Characteristic describe
what things have and can do. Example of characteristics include shape, size,
and colour.

Classification things based the colour, shape and size
When
we classify things,, we need to look for their similarities and differences. Things
with similar characteristic are grouped together. Things with different characteristics
are put into different groups.
How do we show the classification of things?
We
can use either tables or diagrams to show how things can be classified.
We
should to classify some food items based on their tastes

What are the different things around us?
The
great diversity of things around us can be classified into two big group –
Living and Non-living things.

1.2 Classification Things
Living
things are things that are alive. A plant, cat, and boy are examples of living
things.
A
bicycle, chair and ball are example of non-living things.
What are characteristics of living and non-living things?
Living
things and non-living things have different characteristics. To classify
something as a living or non-living thing, we have to observe its
characteristics.
Characteristic
between Living and non-living things
1. Need
air, water and food
All
living things need air, water and food to stay alive. They will die if there is
not enough air, water or food
Non-living
things do not need air, water and food
2. Grow
If
a living thing grows, It can :
· Increase
in height,
· Increase
in size, and
· Change
in appearance
Living
things grow and change but non living things do not.
3. Respond
to changes around them
Living
things respond to changes around them. Heat, sound, light and touch can affect
how living things behave. For example plant respond to light by growing towards
it.
4. Reproduce
Living
things have young. They reproduce. Non-living things do not reproduce. Why is
it important for living things to reproduce? Living things die when they become
old or when they are eaten by other living things. They may die when they do
not have enough air, water or food. They may also die of illness.
Living
things are also affected by some human activities. Living things reproduce so
that their own kind will continue to exist
What are some group of living things ?
Scientist
put living things into groups. This makes it easier for us to study and
understand the characteristic of different living things.
